” As we head into the third year of the intifada, it can be said that none of Israel’s efforts to root out the infrastructure of terror in the West Bank has helped.” So writes Danny Rubinstein in this article in Ha’aretz.
The obvious implication is that more of the same of Sharon’s “policies” means more death on both sides.
Sadly, the Israeli public has sunken into a state of utter despair and despondency. The NY Times quotes Ma’ariv: “The main feeling accompanying us [Israelis], following yesterday’s events [the attack in Kenya and Beit She'an], was a heavy feeling of suffocation. A dead end, no way out, no solution. No escape.” Hence, as Yediot points out, Israeli’s are turning to Sharon, because he epitomizes hopelesness and no future: “They prefer Sharon’s fatigued face when he tells them that things will be bad. And after things are bad, they’re going to get worse.”
