Akiva Eldar talks about the failure of Sharon’s policies.

“The claim that Sharon is trying to divert public attention away from the suspicion that he accepted a bribe actually diverts public attention away from the suspicion of sins of commission (and omission) that are far worse than bribery. It is enough to ask how many of the thousands of people killed over the last few years would have been alive today if Sharon had transferred Gaza to the Palestinian Authority three years ago, as an advance payment on a final-status agreement.”

My youngest son is reading Machiavelli’s The Prince in school. He pointed out that Machiavelli argued that one way a Prince maintains control of his subjects is through fear. But should the subjects be oppressed so cruelly that they have nothing to lose and no longer fear death, then they become the most dangerous enemy. And that is exactly the situation that Sharon and his policies have created in the West Bank and Gaza. In fact, it exemplifies the reason why all totalitarian regimes are inherently unstable.
