The news has been so depressing lately. And every day I post another depressing article to this Weblog. This creative approach to the conflict brought a smile to my face, so I decided to share it with you. With thanks to the author.
The idea of shared sovereignity was raised by several prominent experts in international law, during the Oslo discussions around Jerusalem. In fact, though, if you think about it, what Deb is really saying is that the only logical solution is one state for all the peoples of Israel/Palestine. But everyone involved is so childish – like two children grabbing one toy and saying “It’s mine. – No it’s mine.” [In fact it was exactly this imagery that I heard a pastor use at one of Hagai Matar's talk this summer.] The emotions are running too high for either of the children to do what we all tell our children to do – share. So maybe Deb’s solution is really best. Tell the two children playing this deadly game: “Yes, it really is yours and yes it really is yours.” Then they both can go home and say they won.
