Someone asked me today on Stand Down Blog what I thought of Mitzna. My response follows below.

Uri Avnery says it very nicely here

Sure Mitzna is another militaristic general, and he’s much farther to the right than I am. But so was Rabin. Mitzna, like Rabin, at least understands that occupation is bad, not just pragmatically, but also morally. So Mitzna is willing to start negotiations now, without preconditions, from the point where they left off in Taba, and go from there. So if he gets elected at least he will change the dynamic away from violence and towards negotiation.

My feeling is that neither side is ready to accept the real solution, which is a bi-national (actually multinational) democratic state. It will take another 50 years for that to happen. Whats needed now is disengagement and a two state solution. Two equal states, not Israel and a bantu-state (which is what Sharon wants). And I think Mitzna’s winning can lead to the two state solution.

At this point though, the odds of Mitzna heading up the next coalition seem slim. But who knows? This is the Holy Land and miracles happen.

By the way, my post there may be of interest as well.
