In an op-ed piece in yesterday’s Times, columnist Tom Friedman calls for war in Iraq if and only if it can lead to democracy there. He argues that by setting up a democratic regime in the Middle East, America can provide an alternative beacon to angry young Muslims. Well, Friedman’s the one whose got it upside down. Going to war is not the way to promote democracy and freedom. The far better and easier way, is to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict now, with a just solution that will guarantee both political and economic freedom to the embattled peoples of the region.
