Despite all the hoopla surrounding the Bush-Abbas meeting, Bradley Burston points out there is much to be skeptical about.
“…Abbas’ expected red-carpet reception in Washington points to a central conundrum facing both the prime minister and those within American and Israeli policymaking circles who see him as a rare hope for progress toward peace.”
“The more that the U.S. and Israel openly honor the man called Abu Mazen (Abbas), the more they run the risk, not only of making him appear to be a collaborator of the West, but of dishonoring the man called Abu Amar – Abbas’ mercurial patron-cum-critic Yasser Arafat – whom Palestinians nearly universally regard as a national symbol.”
