After a tumultuous year on both sides of the conflict, Israelis and Palestinians face extraordinarily difficult choices, challenges, and questions. Scholars and journalists are torn between cautious optimism and bitter pessimism. What does the future hold for Israel/Palestine? Will the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza help bring peace? Has Sharon’s illness created a new political reality? Does Hamas’ victory signal the end of the peace process? And how are these events analyzed in the United States and elsewhere?
The Israel Forum and the Remarque Institute are pleased to welcome Gidon Levy, editorialist and commentator for Ha’aretz; Christopher Hitchens, independent author and journalist; and Elias Khouri, Global Distinguished Professor of Middle Eastern Studies at New York University. The discussion will be presented by Tony Judt, director of the Remarque Institute and Erich Maria Remarque Professor of European Studies at New York University.
