Considering that Bush is the likely winner in the upcoming election, any hope of change in the Israel/Palestine conflict is not going to come from the United States. And certainly the two combatents are not likely to do anything to move things one way or another. Baruch Kimmerling discusses an interesting alternative.
“There is one factor that could instantly change all the parameters and constraints in which the Israelis and the Palestinians are thinking and acting, and could also change the rules of the game between them – and this factor is none other than the European Union – and not the United States as many believe.”
Back in the real world, an internal analysis of Israel’s Foreign Ministry, reported in Ha’aretz, concluded that if things continue the way they are, Israel is likely to face South African style sanctions imposed by the EU.
